Keeping Fluffy Healthy

February is National Cat Health Month. While keeping kitties healthy is important all year long, this is a great time to go over what Fluffy needs to stay in good physical shape. In this article, a Mt. Airy, MD vet offers tips on keeping cats healthy.

Food

Good cat care really starts with good nutrition. Offer your feline buddy the best pet food you can afford. Both canned food and kibble have their own pros and cons, so ask your vet for specific recommendations. Treats are fine, but stick with healthy options, like plain, cooked meat, fish, or chicken; canned tuna, chicken, or crabmeat in water; or shredded deli meat.

Clean Litterbox

Cleaning Fluffy’s litterbox isn’t anywhere near as much fun as playing with her, but it is very important. No one likes a dirty bathroom!

Provide Veterinary Care

Most kitties should come in at least once a year, for exams, vaccinations, and wellness care. Fluffy should also be fixed, microchipped, and kept current on her parasite control. (Tip: ask us about our wellness plans.) If you notice any potential signs of illness between appointments, call your vet right away.

Catproof

Cats aren’t very big, but they have a huge capacity for getting into trouble. Doing some basic petproofing is a simple precaution, but it could make a huge difference. Remove or secure anything that could be dangerous. This includes toxic plants; plastic bags and wrappers; wires and cords; chemicals; medication; and anything small or sharp.

Keep Kitty In

One of the best things you can do to keep your cat safe is to simply keep her indoors. If you let Fluffy wander, she’ll be exposed to some very serious dangers, such as cars, weather, predators, and other cats.

Offer Entertainment

We know, Fluffy spends the majority of her time doing, well, pretty much nothing. However, cats can and do get bored, which is very bad for them emotionally and mentally. Give your furball lots of fun toys to play with, and spend time playing with her regularly. A good window view is also important.

Purrs

In order for Fluffy to truly thrive, she needs to feel loved. Spend time with your kitty! Talk to her, pet her, and let her snooze on your lap if she wants.
