Spoiling a Senior Cat

Is your kitty aged ten or older? If so, Fluffy is officially a senior! Of course, your furball probably won’t be too excited about her retirement, as she’ll be only changing her day job (napping and being cute) for recreational activities (napping and being cute). However, your kitty will benefit from some extra TLC in her golden years. Here, a Mt. Airy, MD vet discusses how to keep your furball purring.

Beds

One of the best ways to spoil an older cat is by making sure that she has plenty of soft beds and napping spots. Store-bought beds are fine, but Fluffy will also appreciate soft blankets folded up and put on chairs, ottomans, or sofas, or in boxes or wicker baskets. Make sure she has at least one comfy sleeping spot before a window with a good view.

Playtime

Fluffy won’t be as frisky as she once was, but she’ll still have her moments. Spend a few minutes a day playing with your kitty. This will benefit her both mentally and physically. Plus, it’s super cute!

Senior Kitty Facilities

Older cats often have a hard time getting in and out of litterboxes with high sides. Get Fluffy a powder room that’s easier for her to use. If your home has more than one floor, get extras.

Good Food

Proper nutrition will make a huge difference in your kitty’s health. Ask your vet for specific advice, including portion sizes, supplements, suitable treats, and tips on moving Fluffy to a senior formula pet food.

Veterinary Care

Your furry pal will need to come in more often as she ages. You may want to consider putting Fluffy on a wellness plan. This facilitates getting your kitty proper veterinary care, by spreading out the cost of her appointments into a monthly bill, which is easier to budget for. It can also save you money! Grooming

Senior kitties sometimes look a bit disheveled. This is because they often get stiff and sore, and have a hard time grooming their entire bodies. Help Fluffy out by brushing her regularly.

Kitty Comforts

Sometimes little things make a big difference. Keep a nightlight on for Fluffy after dark, and set out pet ramps or stairs for her.
