Keeping An Indoor Cat Happy

Do you keep your cat indoors? If so, that’s great! Fluffy will be much safer staying inside, where she is protected from cars, weather, predators, and other threats. She’ll also be much less likely to pick up parasites, such as fleas and ticks, and/or to run away. However, your feline buddy will need lots of entertainment and stimulation. Read on as a Westminster, MD vet offers some tips on keeping your indoor kitty content.

Playing gives Fluffy a chance to indulge her inner huntress. Pouncing, jumping, and running are all great for your pet physically! Playing also offers your kitty beneficial mental stimulation. Take a few minutes a day to play with your furry friend!

Playing with your cat is great, but you can’t spend all your time holding a laser pointer for Fluffy to chase. Make sure your kitty has some things that she can use by herself when you’re away or occupied. Just be careful not to leave wand toys out: you don’t want your furball getting tangled up in them.

Fluffy isn’t shy about getting comfortable on our beds and sofas, but she will really enjoy having things she doesn’t have to share. If you don’t have much room, offer your kitty some vertical space. Cat towers are great for this! Cats also like having things to investigate and explore, like boxes, newspaper tunnels, and pet tents. A comfy window seat is also a must.

Give Fluffy a little taste of nature by setting out some pet-safe plants for her to nibble on and hide behind. This will also keep your home looking and smelling great! Check the ASPCA site for a full list of options.

If you have the space, create a catio for Fluffy by putting cat furniture, toys, and pet-safe plants in a patio or sunroom, or even a sunny corner. If you own your home, you can even make your kitty her own enclosure. There are lots of ways to do this, from buying a screen house to custom building something. This will let your feline friend enjoy some fresh air and stimulation, while keeping her safe.
