Fido On The Farm

August 2 2022

Did you know that Work Like A Dog Day is coming up on August 5th? That probably isn’t common knowledge for those outside the animal care world. However, one thing that is more widely known is the fact that one of Fido’s earliest jobs was helping out on farms, a career he still dabbles in today. Read on as a local Westminster, MD vet offers some advice on having a farm dog.

Pick The Right Pooch

While many dog breeds are well-suited for life on a farm, some are more adapted to specific tasks than others. For instance, Border Collies and English Shepherds are great herding dogs, while a Great Pyrenees may be a wonderful livestock guardian. Do your research! It’s also crucial that Fido be properly socialized as a puppy.

Choose A Farm Dog

If you are sure that you want a pooch to help you with your livestock, then you may want to consider purchasing a puppy that was bred from a working farm dog pair. Ideally, you’ll want to be able to supervise the dog’s parents or even their older siblings at work.

Starting Out

Some dogs are just not well-suited for being working dogs. They may try to eat or play with the animals, which can result in either the pooch or other animals being seriously hurt or even killed. Keep your furry helper on a lead around the animals at first.

Veterinary Care

Fido will need proper veterinary care, just like any other dog. Keep up with his veterinary care needs! You’ll also need to make sure that your canine buddy stays up to date on vaccines and parasite control.

Err On The Side Of Caution

Dogs can be unpredictable at times. Fido may seem to be learning his duties, only to suddenly decide to go after your baby chickens. Play it safe, and don’t leave your furry friend unattended with animals until you’re sure he’ll behave.

Farm Fails

Choosing a dog of a specific breed can be helpful, but even that is no guarantee that Fido will do his job well. Some pooches are just naturally more interested in chasing livestock than in corralling them. If your canine pal acts aggressive towards your animals, consult a professional behaviorist. Or, just make Fido a house pet!
