Holiday Farm Safety For Pets

December 15 2022

Happy Holidays! This can be a beautiful time of year on farms. While work on a farm never stops, it does occasionally slow down. The peace and quiet around the holidays can really be something to savor. Of course, our canine pals also enjoy spending the holidays on the farm. That can make for cute photos! Just be sure to put Fido’s safety first. A Westminster, MD vet offers some advice on this below.

Be Aware Of Wildlife

Our canine companions often alert us to the presence of intruders, whether said intruders are on four feet, two feet, or, as with snakes, no feet at all. However, this can be a dangerous time of year. Many wild animals will be looking to hibernate, if they haven’t hunkered down already. Others will be hungry, and may be more aggressive than usual. Keep a close eye on your pooch. Set up game cameras to track predators, and reinforce vulnerable coops and runs.

Training

Although some breeds are more or less hardwired to herd cattle, that doesn’t mean Fido will immediately know what he’s doing. A pooch that isn’t trained properly can cause all sorts of trouble, and is also at great risk of being injured. Take time to teach your canine bff the do’s and don’ts of being a farm dog. If possible, let him interact with older pups that are already trained. We also recommend starting your furry buddy out on goats or sheep: they’re safer than horses and cows.

Be Cautious Of Treats

Many animals love those special holiday snacks. There’s nothing wrong with bringing treats for your horses, cows, sheep, goats, or whatever animals you have. Just be aware that many livestock animals have very different nutritional needs than dogs. A grape or raisin may be fine for a cow or pig, but they can be deadly to Fido!

Be Cautious Of Water

Do you have a river, pond, or lake on your property? Thin ice is just as hazardous to pooches as it is for us. Keep your furry pal away from frozen bodies of water!

Barn Cats

Don’t forget about your barn cats! Many kitties are quite happy to provide pest control services in exchange for room and board. Provide your adorable exterminators a special treat.
