Follow Instructions
Your vet will provide you with specific after-care instructions. These will vary a bit, depending on the type of procedure your furry pal is getting. Be sure to follow these directions to the letter. If there’s anything you’re not clear about, don’t hesitate to ask.
Don’t Bathe Until You Get The Green Light
Unless otherwise instructed, hold off on giving your furry best friend a bath until your vet gives the thumbs-up. In most cases, this will be when stitches have dissolved or been removed.
Watch For Complications
With most procedures, complications are pretty rare. However, that doesn’t mean they can’t happen. Keep an eye on the surgical site, and watch for any indications of infection. These would include redness, swelling, foul odors, pus, bleeding, or ripped stitches. If you see anything like this, contact your vet immediately.
Offer A Quiet Spot
Do you have other pets or very young children? It may be better to put your furry patient in a separate room while they heal, so they can recuperate in a quiet area. You can use a baby gate at the door, so your cute patient doesn’t feel as isolated. Play some soothing music if you like. Some pets seem to enjoy this!
Bedding
Your furry friend will probably spend a lot of time in bed for the next few days. It’s a good idea to wash your pet’s bedding before you bring them home. This would be a great time to get your four-legged buddy a comfy new bed to recuperate in!
Take It Easy
Our animal companions are very playful, which is one thing we love about them. However, you want to avoid encouraging your dog or cat to do anything strenuous until they have completely healed. There will be plenty of time for playing Fetch or Catch The Red Dot when your furry pal is all better!
