How to Properly Spoil Your Dog

August 1 2021

Spoil Your Dog Day is coming up August 10th! For many people, the thought of spoiling Fido pretty much entails doling out lots of bacon and belly rubs. This isn’t exactly wrong: those things will get that cute tail going. However, if you want to spoil your furry bff the right way, you may want to do a few other things as well. A local Westminster, MD vet lists some of them below.

Good Bedding

Fido won’t sleep very comfortably on a thin pad. As he gets older, he’ll get stiff and sore, and uncomfortable bedding will become even more of an issue. Make sure your canine buddy has a great bed to look adorable in.

Playtime

Playing is fun for Fido, but it’s also great for him, both mentally and emotionally. Try to play with him every day, even if it’s just for a few minutes, and pick up new toys for him regularly.

Training

Making sure Fido obeys isn’t just about petiquette. It’s also important for safety. If he ever has a health issue, good training can also make it much easier for him to be handled and examined.

Grooming

We know, baths aren’t exactly dogs’ favorite thing. However, hygiene is important. Dirt, dead fur and dander can make your pet very itchy, and can make his coat a breeding ground for parasites and skin issues. Nail trims and dental trims, although equally unpopular with our canine pals, also greatly affect Fido’s comfort, health, and well-being.

Veterinary Care

We know: taking Fido to a drive through seems more like spoiling him than taking him to the vet does. However, keep in mind that healthy dogs are happy dogs. If your canine companion hasn’t come in for a while, make him an appointment. (You can always get him that hamburger later.)

Quality Food

All dog foods are definitely not created equal. Offering Fido a high-quality brand that is right for his size, age, and health, can make a huge difference. Ask your vet for specific advice.

Safety

Last but certainly not least, take some steps to keep your pup safe, and prevent the chances of accidents or injuries. Fido should be fixed, microchipped, and kept current on parasite control and vaccines. Petproofing is also important, as is climate control.
