Keeping Your Cat Healthy

February 15 2023

February is National Cat Health Month! Our feline pals are fairly hardy, but they do need great TLC to thrive. A Westminster, MD vet goes over some key aspects of Fluffy’s care needs in this article.

Diet

Cats are carnivores by nature, and their diets should reflect that. Keep this in mind when picking out your furry buddy’s food. Check the label, and stay away from products that contain lots of fillers such as corn and wheat. It’s also important to offer your kitty a food that is right for her age and health. For example, a kitten won’t have the same dietary needs as a senior. Ask your vet for specific advice.

Litterbox

Litterbox setups aren’t exactly rocket science, but there are things to keep in mind. Fluffy’s bathroom should be in a quiet place that is easy for her to get to. If you have more than one kitty, you’ll need more than one litterbox. Cats don’t like sharing bathrooms!

Grooming

Cats are quite self-reliant in this area. Fluffy will take time every day to carefully clean her pretty fur. However, she can still use some help. Brushing your feline buddy regularly will remove dead fur and dander, which will reduce hairballs. It’s also good for Fluffy’s circulation, and just helpful for bonding.

Veterinary Care

We can’t overstate how important proper veterinary care is. Fluffy should be fixed and microchipped. It’s also important to keep up with your kitty’s wellness care, which includes regular exams and screenings, as well as vaccines and parasite control. If you notice any signs that something may be wrong with your furry friend, contact your vet right away.

Safety

Kitties are notorious for getting into various shenanigans. Your feline friend doesn’t really know what is dangerous for her, so it’s up to you to keep her safe. Petproofing is a big part of that. Remove or secure potential hazards, such as things with ropes or cords. We also strongly recommend keeping Fluffy indoors. An ounce of prevention really is worth pounds of cure!

Entertainment

Just like people, cats can be negatively impacted by things like stress, boredom, loneliness, and anxiety. Pay lots of attention to Fluffy! Talking to her, petting her, and playing with her will help her feel safe and loved.
