Celebrating Love Your Pet Day On The Farm

February 15 2022

Did you know that Love Your Pet Day is coming up on February 20th? This may not quite have achieved national holiday status, but it’s still a pretty important topic. Animals need to feel loved and safe, just as people do. That includes farm animals! Read on as a Westminster, MD vet lists some ways to brighten up your four-legged friends’ day.

Dogs

Fido is pretty easy to please: toys, treats, and playtime will all get that tail going. However, this is also a good time to revisit your pup’s care regimen. Has it been a while since he’s been to the dog park? Could he use a new bed? These things can make a big difference when it comes to keeping your canine buddy happy and healthy.

Cats

New beds are bound to please your feline overlord. Fluffy may also appreciate some catnip, a new toy, or a special treat. If your furball doesn’t have any kitty furniture, this is also a great time to buy or make some for her. These apply to barn cats, too!

Cows

Bessie may appreciate some extra attention. Or, if you want to go all-out, get her a roller brush, so she can scratch and brush herself to her heart’s content. Treats will also please your bovine buddy. You can offer apples, pears, carrots, oats, or even some molasses. Ask your vet for more information.

Pigs

Did you know that pigs are extremely intelligent? Toys provide Porky with entertainment and enrichment. Foraging toys, squeaky toys, and stuffed animals are a few porcine favorites.

Horses

If Silver could list his favorite things, carrots, mints, and sugar cubes would probably rank pretty high. Your equine pal may also benefit from a stall toy, ear scritches, or maybe some extra turnout time. A new halter, blanket, or saddle pad would also not be inappropriate.

All Animals

No matter what kind of animal you have, there is always going to be something you can do to make them feel more loved and content. Providing good food and a clean, comfortable habitat are great starts, but there’s much you can do beyond that. Do some research! Veterinary care is also important. Have your four-legged friends examined regularly, and watch for signs of illness.
