Did you know that cats are considered seniors as early as age nine? Fluffy can live well into her teens, or even into her twenties, with good care. However, she’ll need some extra attention in her golden years. A Westminster, MD vet offers some advice on senior cat care below.
Comforts
Keeping your pet comfortable is more important than keeping her entertained. Make sure that Fluffy has lots of soft beds to curl up in. Your furball may also appreciate a litterbox with low walls, which will be easy for her to get in and out of.
Night Lights
Older cats sometimes experience a decline in their vision, just like people do. Setting out nightlights will help your kitty find her way around after dark.
Food
As Fluffy ages, her nutritional needs will also change a little. She may not need as many calories, but may benefit from senior-formula foods. Ask your vet for specific advice on this.
Playtime
Fluffy may be slowing down, but she’ll still enjoy letting her inner kitten out. Playing is actually very beneficial for kitties. It not only helps keep your feline pal in shape, it’s also great for her mind. Timing those run/jump/pounce combos takes concentration!
Grooming
Your cat may have trouble reaching her whole body to groom herself, as she may be quite stiff and sore. Help her out by gently brushing her. This is also a good time to check your furry friend over, and look for things like lumps, bumps, or sore spots.
Safety
We always advise keeping cats in: they’re just much safer indoors. Older cats are particularly at risk. They aren’t fast or agile enough to escape cars and other hazards, and may also forget how to get back home. Keep Fluffy safe and sound indoors!
Veterinary Care
Just like people, cats benefit from more frequent veterinary appointments as they age. Ask your vet to recommend an appointment schedule.
Jumping
Fluffy may have a hard time jumping or climbing to her favorite napping spots. Set out some pet ramps or footstools for her. Or, gently give her a lift.
Love
Kitties are very emotional, and they always feel safer when they feel loved and safe. Pay lots of attention to Fluffy, and keep that motor going.
